Smoky Joe’s Style BBQ Seitan

Seitan roasted with BBQ sauce that tastes like Smokey Joe’s. I didn’t go so heavy on the BBQ sauce, but you can add more.

BBQ Sauce
Tastes quite a bit like the sauce at Smokey Joe’s. This makes just enough sauce. Make more if you want to serve some on the side or are using it on a larger batch of seitan (or whatever).

2 Tbl. brown sugar
1/4-1/2 tsp. cumin
1/4-1/2 tsp. cajun spice (or schwarma spice, which actually I like even better)
4 Tbl. ketchup
4 Tbl. molasses
1/3 tsp. cider vinegar (can also add a bit of lemon juice)

To make the sauce more like Horizon’s BBQ sauce, add some lime and fresh ginger.

Larger Batch Version:

2/3 cup EACH ketchup and molasses
1 tsp. cider vinegar
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. cajun spice
1/3 cup brown sugar

Note: I didn’t cook it before slathering it on the seitan because I was roasting the seitan. But, if you are serving the sauce as a condiment, you need to cook it for a little to dissolve the sugar and blend the flavors.

Slather 3/4 lb. of seitan with sauce and roast at 375 for a half hour. Can serve with more sauce.

    Sauces sound amazing! I’ve got some seitan just waiting for some of this. Do you think a drop or two of Liquid Smoke would take it to another level?

    Texas-style BBQ with molasses is my absolute favorite kind (sorry, Kansas City!). I’ve actually never tried to BBQ anything at home, because I’ve always lived somewhere with an abundance of barbecue places. I should probably put that on my “to-make” list.
